Please Note: Internships are UNPAID and structured to last approximately 12 weeks. Program dates are 02/01/2010 – 04/23/2010. Course Credit is available. Resume and Cover Letter are required. Students should have a strong academic record (3.0 strongly preferred) and good character. Students must have completed their sophomore year in college prior to the start of the internship. In addition, students may not have graduated college or graduate school prior to the start of the internship (i.e. STUDENTS MUST BE ENROLLED IN SCHOOL DURING THE TIME OF THIS INTERNSHIP). Students seeking college credit are strongly encouraged to apply. Note to International Students: All international students will be required to provide documentation of proper visa paperwork prior to your arrival if accepted to the program. Only J1 or F1 visas will be accepted. Deadline to apply for Spring Internships is December 11th 2009. Due to the high volume of candidates for Turner’s Internship Program, interested students are encouraged to apply for openings as soon as possible, as these positions will be filled on an ongoing basis. Future semester Internship postings will be available after the current semester deadline.

Department:
CNN Design/HLN provides graphic and animation support for use by the live production and programming units of HLN, the domestic cable news channel.

Internship Description:
You will observe and learn from our compositors and designers in the design, creation, compositing and delivery of 2D and 3D motion-graphic projects for broadcast. You will also have the opportunity to create material for your portfolio.

You will also learn and understand how to:
Organize project materials;
Design, develop and produce broadcast opens, live news production support graphics and reporter package animations;
Create content in breaking news situations;
Create elements for use by HLN Design staff;
Communicate with clients and colleagues;
Digitally deliver content across multiple platforms, locations and resolutions;
Decide which tools to use for project completion;
Perform other duties as required by projects and production schedule.
Develop and/or enhance current skill level on various broadcast design software applications

Required Qualifications/Skills:
Software:
Adobe Photoshop; Adobe After Effects (or other non-linear compositing software such as Shake or Flint); Final Cut Pro (or other non-linear editing software such as Smoke or Avid); Maya (or other 3D animation software such as 3DS Max or Cinema 4D). Proficiency in these software titles is helpful, but is not required. A working knowledge of these applications is highly recommended.

Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Flash, DVD Authoring (such as DVD Studio Pro) or audio editing familiarity is helpful but not required. Apple Macintosh experience is also preferred but is not required.

A Broadcast Design focus in the student’s educational experience is beneficial. Effective communication skills are necessary. Effective understanding of current newsmakers and events would also be helpful.

Portfolio or examples of student’s prior projects/class work will be reviewed and are essential for consideration.
