SUMMARY
News 8 Austin, Time Warner's 24-hour news channel in Austin, Texas, offers UNPAID internship opportunities for college students interested in getting valuable work experience in the news industry during the Spring 2010 semester (January 29, 2010 - May 14, 2010).
ASSIGNMENTS
Videojournalism (reporting) - Students will shadow video journalists and learn the basics of reporting, producing, editing, and shooting stories for television broadcast. Prefer students that can work weekends.
Photojournalism â Shadow photojournalists in the field, work with electronic newsgathering, lighting and audio and perform non-linear digital editing.
Sports - Shadow sports reporting staff, write sports, monitor and log sports videos and work on videotape editing.
Graphics - Work closely with television graphic designers. Prefer students that can work Monday - Friday.
Human Resources - Work with station Human Resources Generalist to learn the basics of human resource management, with an emphasis on employee relations and recruiting. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and filing systems are required. Prefer students that can work during core business hours, Monday - Friday.
Online Content/Web - A unique opportunity to practice your AP-style and work on your own writing style. We are not exactly print, nor magazine, nor TV news style...we're a combination of all three.
Production - Work closely with master control operators and technical directors with video and audio transmission and quality control of on-air content.
Weather - Work closely with meteorologists reporting local weather.
Marketing - Work closely with Promotions Manager to effectively market News 8. Will coordinate and attend promotional events. Prefer students that can work core business hours, Monday - Friday.
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates for intern positions MUST:
1. Be enrolled in a degree program (associateâs, bachelorâs, masterâs or doctorate) and in good academic standing.
2. Receive academic credits for the internship.
3. Must be able to attend orientation and work a minimum of 16 hours a week during the length of the internship (January 29, 2010 - April 9, 2010).
A successful intern will need to have a âlearning attitudeâ as News 8 Austin staff will often teach the skills needed for various tasks. The intern will work independently at times, and as a team member at others.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE Course work and previous internship experience in TV production, journalism, information technology,advertising, marketing, human resources, graphic design, or photojournalism preferred.
