MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB:
1. Lead the Commercial Breeder Program to select the best performing hybrid for China tropical and subtropical corn area at the shortest possible time.
2. Coordinate with TI, TD, MNF, Sales and Marketing teams for functional alignment of pipeline hybrids (PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4) that all relevant information are available during hybrid advancement.
3. Responsible for ensuring hybrids increase and seeds availability for field demonstration and registration trials.
4. Responsible in data analysis, product characterization and recommendation for hybrids and its associated inbreds for advancement to PS2, PS3 and PS4 stages, ensuring that pipeline hybrids can meet customers’ requirements in the yield and other important agronomic traits.
KEY BUSINESS ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Hybrid Development & Testing:
a. Work closely with Testing Operations Managers on hybrid evaluation.
b. Work closely with international breeders within, across and outside Asia Pacific in coordination with AP Data & Marker Lead for new finished and coded inbred lines to generate new predicted hybrid combinations for testing across major market segments and Mega Environments.
c. Take ownership of pipeline hybrids starting from PS1 to the commercialization stage.
d. Responsible for the seed increase of pipeline hybrids and its parental lines meeting the required amount of seeds, genetic purity, germination and delivery time across functions.
e. Responsible in hybrid make-up for registration either for government commercial accreditation or for PVP/PBR protection.
2. Functional Support & Alignment:
a. Coordinate with TI for trait conversions (across traits of commercial priorities) for the parental lines of pipeline hybrids (PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4). Closely monitor these line conversions with TI every after season of trials and make appropriate recommendations.
b. Coordinate with MNF by providing the SPR team with the required amount of seeds for the parental lines at PS1, PS2 and PS3 stages for their SPR studies to generate the information on COGS. Also, responsible in handing off to PFN the conventional parental lines of all hybrids advanced to PS1 stage.
c. Work closely with Sales and Marketing teams for its market dynamics and the changes in hybrid requirements in order to be able to align hybrid development based on these changes the fastest we can.
3. Data Management, Product Characterization and Hybrid Recommendations:
a. Manage Midas data base and be proficient in FBWT, STRT, and other testing tools with help from data and marker lead to support hybrid make up of predicted hybrids (conventional and traits), data analysis and hybrid advancement process.
b. Active participant in the Hybrid Advancement Process and take ownership with the other key functions on taking products from PS1 to commercial.
4. Relationship and Networking:
a. Network with regional and global CBs to establish good working relationship for the transfer of best practices in hybrid development, testing, mechanization, automation and germplasm knowledge.
b. Touch based with corn farmers and key stakeholders to determine and know the product dynamics and changing needs of the market.
5. Hire, manage and develop best talents for the commercial breeding team in SW China.
6. Be an active member of the China Corn Breeding Leadership Team.
7. Assure that research team is trained in all ESH procedures for safe operation of the research program.
Qualifications: *
CORE BUSINESS / FUNCTIONAL SKILLS AND EDUCATION:
1. Ph.D. in Plant Breeding and Genetics, or M.Sc. in Plant Breeding and Genetics or related field with 3 years of crop breeding experience. Related breeding experience and/or driving license are a plus.
2. Strong background in plant breeding, genetic and statistics.
3. Proficiency with database applications, spreadsheet software, and experimental design are required.
4. 4. Must execute good influential and strategic skills to move projects forward.
5. Great communication skill in both English and Chinese (oral and written).
6. Individual likes to work in the field and travel across the country.
